My H1 is expiring on April 30, 2003. I am looking for a new job. How long can I stay after expiry of my H1. My friend was telling me that I can stay upto 180 days after expiry. Also if I get a new employer after a gap, can a new/transfer H1 application be filed.
 
You can stay for 180 days without triggering a mandatory bar on reentry. However, you would be here illegally for that entire period and would be subject to detention and removal if detected. It is also possible that the consular officials would deny a visa due to your overstay.

INS almost certainly would not permit you to get a visa extension since after your visa expired there would be nothing to extend.
