Hello,

I am a GC holder and need to stay abroad for 7 months for completing some educational course. Do I need to apply for re-entry permit for this stay ? My lawyer told me that "to be safe", I need to apply for re-entry permit. She also mentioned that even though the law says 1 yr stay abroad is ok, it all depends on the officer at the POE. She also mentioned that even if I don't apply for re-entry permit, then atleast visit the US once in between the 7 months.

Could you please share your experiences and thoughts ?

yes,you do not require a re-entry permit if the travel is less than a year.if you are going out for more than a year you need a re-entry permit.
another thing if you go out of u.s.a you cannot apply for citizenship till it is 4yrs1day after you come back from such a visit(any visit more than 6 months)

thanks. Yes, now I am not concerned about the citizenship application requirements. I am just interested in maintaining my greencard.

I am interested in getting citizenship eventually. I just got my greencard last month. So my 7 month stay outside is just going to add 7 months to my 5 year wait for citizenship... I am fine with that.

So when you travelled outside for schooling, how long were the duration of stay outside ? Did you get a reentry permit during those trips ?

Thanks
