How is it being a Consultant?

I apologize if this posting is in a wrong forum.

I have a MS and few years of experience and am currently in a stable company (underpaid ofcourse :) ) doing some not so bad work. I have an offer from a company as a Consultant. (Not the Big 4 consulting companies, but close)

Can anyone tell me how it is in the Consultant job? I dont want to kick myself later by making a wrong decision to switch. The new offer definitely is more technologically challenging but involves travel on assignments. I definitely feel the style of living would be different than just sitting all by myself in a cubicle writing code. Also, does a consultant job pay a lot more than the usual software dev jobs?

I am not very familar with the market out there now. I would like to hear from people who think I am crazy and from those who think I am making a smart move.

Please guys, any help is appreciated.

Are u a single or married? If it is later, then never ever even dream of giving up your current job. I did that mistake couple of years back and I am paying the price for it.

If single, then definitely you are free and have the time of your life. I would not even imagine working on a routine job like the one you have if i were a single. I am not sure on the payscale side. It depends.

Wish we could switch the places!

I am single currently but wont be one for long.. Its too tempting for me to accept the offer especially after going through so many rounds of interviews.. But I guess in the long term perspective, it might not be a sane decision.. .. still confused!
