How frequently can you enter US on a 10 year multiple entry visa

I work here on a L1 visa. My dad recently got a 10 year multiple entry visa from Chennai. I would like him to stay with me as long as I'm here. I guess that at the POE the I94 will be given for a maximum of 6 months. What options do I have, so that he can stay with me in the US for longer than 6 months. I have read in one of these forums that he can visit near by countries (like Canada, Mexico) and return to US so that he gets a fresh I94. How feasible and safe is this. Basically I want to know how frequently can he enter US without the immigration officers raising a question at the POE. Any pointers to this will be of great help to me. Thanks!.

Each and avery time your father enters a US border (thru air or road) he needs to satisfy the immigration official that his stay is in line with the visa issued to him. Since he will be admitted as a visitor here, visitors don't have a need to stay beyond the usual period of 6 months. An extension is granted at the discretion of the immigration official if there is a genuine need. If at any time the immigration inspector suspects that the visitor intends to live here rather than just visit, the person can be denied admission and sent back at the borders.
There is no way your dad can stay here legally for as long as you will stay on L1.

Hi nkm, so do you know any other way of making his stay legal here. Can you suggest anything like status change to other visa types. If so, could you please let me know in detail.

There are no other ways (other than marrying a US citizen) to do so. He will have to wait until you gain US citizenship.
Does he have expertise/skills that can be used in the US? If so he can consider H1.

How about chefs?

Wondering what kind of visas the chefs in Oriental restuarants are on? My father is a great cook...and his skills could be utilized in restuarants...

immifive.

I would not advise him to go to Canada or Mexico as I personaly know of a case where the parent was not granted extension on his return. If I am not mistaken INS advises that the B Visa holder must either return to his country of residence/ citizenship or to the country where the Visa was obtained and then re-enter the US.

You may not be able to keep him here too long but u could extend his stay by providing strong evidence of his ties to his home or compeling reason for him to return home. Evidence of Financial support from u or his own savings. I have kept my mother here for 2 yrs & more. Read my other postings.
