how does Knowing first few digits of EAC # help us in finding the case status?

You are the iio (userid). You should know it better.

Still, EAC # gives you a fair clue of when should one expect I-485 approval.

For example, Currently they are processing EAC # from EAC 00 007 XXXXX to EAC 00 084 XXXXX, then you know they can make a useless (waste of time) anticipation of your I-485 approval. But, i feel its the same as anticipating through others ND/RD dates.

Sorry, but the EAC# are not for fair clues. They are generated according to a logic.

Example: EAC 00 033 50001

EAC stands for Vermont or VSC
00 stands for the fiscal year 2000 (oct 1st 1999 - sep 30, 2000)
033 stands for the the day number in that fiscal year, 33rd day(working day) from oct 1st 1999
50001 stands for the case number

So, this is how how you get the "fair clue" and that is exactly why people refer to the Notice Date.
