how do they track?

I have my green card, and I have been a permanent resident in the US since 2000. I would like to apply for my citizenship. From what I undrestand, I have to live in the states for 5 years consecutively in order to apply for my citizenship.. However I recently read this:
Physical Presence in the U.S.

You must have resided for at least:

Thirty months in the U.S. during the previous five years (18 months during the previous three years for spouses of U.S. citizens) preceding your application for
naturalization

Three months in the USCIS district where you are filing your application for naturalization

So my questions are:
1. out of the 5 years, i really only have to live 30 months out of the 5 years before applying for my citizenhip?
2. How can the uscis tell if you have been living or working in another country?
3. I have only worked for 1/5 years that i have been in the US. IS there a way the USCIS can tell i have been living or working in another country?

Thanks, all info is greatly appreciated.

If you left and entered the country by air, they would probably have a record of it. I'm not sure what happens it a GC holder is going by car to canada or mexico.

Don't try to lie on your application. If you do, and it is subsequently detected, they can revoke your citizenship. Fraud on the application or in the interview is just about the only grounds on which they can take away the citizenship after it is granted.

i thought they would have records when you cross the border to canada and mexico thou.

if you are asked to prove yourself on the number of days being outside the US, what would you do?

The weird part is that canada recorded only my departure. but usa did not.

For visitors by air from Canada, I think US immigration is conducted at the Canadian airport itself. I know of this @ Toronto.

By car, I understand that as you Car approached the immigration check point, the licence plate is checked for registration.
