How do I postpone the oath ceremony?

I'll be travelling in Europe in February, when my oath ceremony is scheduled, so I think I'll need to postpone it by a couple months or so. How do I do this? It says on the N445 to return the document, but I can't see any return address!

La_Valette, you sound like you had a smooth immigration journey. Good for you. Please do yourself a favor and don't mess it up. You have only two months to go to become a US citizen. I don't know if you have been scheduled an oath ceremony, but if you did. DO NOT MISS IT. Repeat. DO NOT MISS OR POSTPONE YOUR OATH CEREMONY. There is no guarantee you'll be scheduled an oath date in a near future thereafter. Your file can get misplaced, maybe even lost. USCIS officers are extremely busy. It looks like your trip is not an emergency since it is in February, but if you have to come back for one day from Europe to take the oath, or even better, entirely postpone the trip, you will do yourself a big favor.

USCIS is not your typical commercial company with a customer service department. It is a bureaucracy, and the worst kind in the USA. Keep this in mind.

Good luck to you.

Please do yourself and me a Huge Favor; Don't miss your oath. take it from me. Maybe you are taking the citizenship for granted, but others, and I am one of them, had to fight hard to get the citizenship. I paid over $4000 so far and I still don't know if i will get it or not!!

Ok, forget the money side, think about the stress living in uncertainty for 18 months!

Please, go to your oath and don't miss out.

Good luck :)

Point taken. It's a shame though - the USCIS bureaucracy really is beyond belief if they can't handle as simple a thing as a small postponement...

Maybe they can; The big question is: DO YOU WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCES?!?!
If for one day you have been in our shoes, people like myself, Publicus, SONY and most of the other guys here, you've never-ever consider to postpone the oath...you don't realize how lucky you are, don't push your luck. ;)

of course they can postpone it. it is your choice. if you feel like asking them to postpone it, go ahead. i guess you just need to do what is the best for yourself.

Postpone oath date

I need to postpone my oath to a later date. Can anyone please guide on the process for it? I have the N445 form which they say I can send request for another date, but I do not know the address to send it to. Is it to the DO or SC, how can I find that out?

This will not resolve your issue, but for others who may be reading this prior to their interview, I would suggest that you talk with your interviewing officer about any upcoming travel plans you have and how that might impact your oath date. For myself and my wife we had a 2 week out of country trip planned for 3 days after the interview. The date we would have initially received for the oath would have been during that time (Charlotte oath dates are about a week post interview from what I've been hearing). We simply asked our officers if they could re-schedule the oath for after we returned from the trip and they did it without any problems at all. They were very helpful in coordinating getting us both the same date, and we pretty much got the date we asked for (March 2nd, 2006 - 1 week from today! :D ).

So, if you know you will be out of the country or unavailable during specific times you might be able to handle it at the interview. Note that we passed the interview and received the letter the same day at the Charlotte, NC office, and this might only be possible in similar circumstances; however, it would not hurt to ask about this even if you don't get approval and the letter on the spot.

Cheers,
Brian

You can make an infopass appointment and go in person to see if they'll do it.
But my advice, dont do it. Even if you have to spend some money to be back in US for your oath, it is still better than your file making extra rounds in this dark bureaucracy.
