How do I get married with an expired passport ?

Hi, I came to the US almost three years ago through a b1/b2 visa and I overstayed it and my passport expired also. Now I want to get married with my girlfriend but here in Illinois they’re denying my municipal Chicago ID along with my birth certificate and it’s translated along with the lease under my name, also my student ID. I contacted my council and they said that I need a green card or a valid student ID to renew my passport and I don’t have those. So what are my options for this matter ?, and thank you.

So you overstayed and let your passport expire and only now you’re worrying about a valid ID? It’s hard to give good answers when people do things like this. Usually you can get to your home country on an expired passport if it’s a direct flight, or the embassy should give you a transportation letter, if that is the only option to renew the passport.

I just don't get it.. folks come with a suitcase or two to 'visit' the US, then drop their entire life back home to overstay for years. I didn't know birth certificate is required to be carried on a b2 vacation.

Passport could be renewed in a home country.

Do you mean that you applied for a Chicago CityKey ID and they denied that? Or that you already have a Chicago CityKey and they are not accepting that as an ID for the purposes of marriage?

What is your country of nationality? You should be able to get a passport or some other travel document even if you are out of status.

yes OP seems to be implying they won't renew his passport here without valid status (I know some, not all, country embassies do this) but worst case he can get home and get a new passport there. Obviously he doesn't want to do this as he then faces the ban/waiver request consequences of his overstay. Maybe his girlfriend can go with him, marry there and stay with him till able to return to the US?

That's the consequence of overstaying more than 2 years.

Girlfriend going with OP to his home country and getting married there is a solution. Obtaining a US b2 visa suggests he documented a decent life in his country that he intended to return to.

One thing that i always made sure of, is that my passport would be valid for the duration that i planned to stay AND make sure i get to renew it before it expires ABROAD.

not sure why someone would not care about this (especially if someone is on a short term visa B1/B2), unless that was the intention from the beginning (to overstay)
