How do I choose accounting services while on TN status in the US?

Hi all,

I’m currently on TN status working in the US as an accountant and trying to sort out my US/foreign tax and accounting obligations. Since TN holders can have unique situations with IRS, state filings, and potentially home-country requirements, I want to make sure I select the right accounting service.

Has anyone used an accounting firm familiar with TN professionals?

What should I ask to ensure they understand cross-border work income reporting and tax treaties?

Any recommendations or red flags to watch out for?

Hi,

I’ve worked on TN status and would recommend using an accounting firm that specializes in international or cross-border tax issues. Make sure they understand IRS requirements for nonresidents, state tax filings, and how tax treaties affect income reporting. Ask about their experience with TN professionals specifically, and whether they’ve handled foreign income or dual-state situations. Red flags include firms that aren’t familiar with TN or visa-related tax rules, or cannot explain how they manage cross-border reporting. Mid-sized firms with international tax experience usually handle these cases better than general small accounting offices.
