How do Canadians get an F-1?

I'm a Canadian citizen that has been admitted to a University in the US for a Ph.D. program. The I-20 will be issued and delivered to me within the next week. I'm a little lost on what to do next.

My understanding is that I need to apply for an F-1 VISA. I have tried to book an appointment at the US Consulate in Toronto (where I live) but the second I select "Canadian" as nationality on the online appointment form, it boots me out and tells me Canadian citizens should just take their documents to a US port of entry. I'm unsure as to what this means. My program duration is 5 years, and I am almost certain I need a VISA and an interview appointment to get one.

Is there some other way I need to be doing this, rather than booking an interview appointment? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ask your Univ ISO

hi,

why don't you check with the international student advisor at the university where you have been accepted. usually one can email them and they should know what a canadian citizen would need to do to be able to study in the US.

hope this helps
