How about my NIW case?

I will finish my Phd soon. Bio major.

I have only one journal paper till now, but that paper has a mini review in another journal (both have impact factor around 15). It has been cited 15 times since last October.

My current boss got his NIH grant successfully using the project that I am doing.

I think I can get some good letters from some famous professors, and two or three of them are academic members of science.

Is there any chance if I apply for NIW now? Thanks a lot!

yes and no!
NIW depends on national interest and intrinsic merit which i guess you work will have. But they also see whether you are only capable candidate to acheive that goals ....since you are just starting to work (after education phD) it might be difficult to acheive only thru letters but its within reach with special efforts of independent letters (many the better). Also ur boss got the grant......... its his grant not urs.....this will not help much for ur case. You may also have difficulties explaining 6 year H1B story too.....If i were you would wait for while and then apply for NIW.

It depends on your area of work and its impact on US. Is it a hot area?
With a good attorney, I think it is possible.
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! But I don't understand "You may also have difficulties explaining 6 year H1B story too.....". What do you mean? I haven't even started to apply for H1-B yet.

WELL GENERALLY THEY ARGUE THAT YOU CAN ACHEIVE UR NIW GOALS THRU H1B ALSO AS YOU HAVE 6 YEARS TO GO (ASSUMING U WORK ON H1B AFTER PHD) ...THATS WHAT I MEAN THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE TO ARGUE CAREFULLY ABOUT WHY STILL YOU NEED GREEN CARD THRU NIW!!

The letters alone doesn't help you to successfully go through NIW. Your work should be an area of substantial intrinsic merit, benefit should be national in scope(prospective in nature, so your past records justifies future benefits), adverse effect if labor certification needed. The third prong is difficult for you now. You have one publication and 15 citations to it. Is this 15 citation is from your lab or from your colleagues/ if it, no use. Your boss NIH grant is no use to your NIW. Or if the 15 citations from around the world, it is good.

if you post all your credentials, I try to poast a better justification of your NIW.

Thank you! I see. So do you have any suggestion how to argue this point?

One of the 15 citations is from my collegue in my department. A few of them are reviews of the field from good journals. All are published in the U.S.

Thanks a lot!
