House republicans delayed the House-Senate conference committee meeting until september this year. There is a probability that this will pass around November this year.
Don't count on it. Republicans are not stupid. A leader of a mid-size anti-illegal immigration group told me that the strategy behind that is to push this after the November election. So far it seems by November, many incumbents pro CIR/amnesty may be voted out. Imagine it would be easier for Republicans to pass HR 4437 (enforcement only) or at most a Cornyn/Kyl bill after that more easily, since supports of stricter immigration would more support on that and would not count with some of those in office by November. For example, in my State, a very hard-core amnesty and pro legal immigration Senator Cantwell is facing heavy opposition from his opponent who is a Republican.
Who knows a 'miracle' can happen though and Democrats win big time. Or perhaps Cornyn/Kyl bill can surface after November ? Well, I am afraid that even if that is the case, the process of introducing, voting and making a Cornyn/Kyl bill into law would take place no earlier than July 2007. Are we mentally sane enough to wait until then... :-(
