WASHINGTON -- The U.S. government has begun an advertising campaign to tell more than 200,000 longtime illegal immigrants that they may be eligible for lawful permanent residency under legislation that expires this year.
The $784,000 radio, television and poster campaign is the largest paid promotion effort the Immigration and Naturalization Service has undertaken since an amnesty program for illegal immigrants in the 1980s, agency spokeswoman Virginia Kice said.
