Hi I am new here ;)

I appreciate that it is frustrating when the same questions get asked over and over but I am looking for advice for such a wide variety of things so that wont work ;-)

Anyway.

I am 16 years old and am living in Scotland, UK at the moment. I am a British Citizen. In a few years time I would love to move over to the usa to live and work pernamently.

I dont have any family members in America so I believe I am left with the following options:

Employement Visa
Marriage to US Citizen
Investing x amount of dollars into a business

I am confused with how would be the best way to get a green card then eventually come on to apply for Citizenship.

Does anyone have any advice on how is the best method of becoming a citizen over time eg employement tips or any other reccommended ways of getting into the states.

I really do appreciate your time and thanks for any response ;)

Thanks
Barry Riddell

Best (legal) ways:

Get an education (at least 4 years of college) in an area in demand in the US, e.g. nursing, then look for a U.S. employer to sponsor you. If you can manage it, go to college in the U.S. on a student visa.

Go to college, then get hired by a company which may eventually send you to the U.S. on an L-visa (once you've worked for them in a specialty or managerial position for a couple of years).

Marry an American.

Barry, as MrAlex pointed out, currently in the US there is a shortage of people in the Nursing/Healthcare sector. Obviously that may change after you've gone and attended University for 3-4 years and are entering the work force.

The suggestion of coming here on a student visa, attending Univ/College is the best option. Once you're done with your degree you can work in the US for one year post graduation and then hope your employer would be willing to sponsor you for a Work Visa (H) and then a Green Card down the road.

The other options you've listed, although viable, would probably be harder to come by.

In terms of finding out what job are "hot", my best suggestion would be to look up sites like www.monster.com, www.dice.com, www.hotjobs.com and do some typical employment based searches within the US.

Good Luck -

The U.S. government also publishes forecasts of employment needs. These used to come out in "U.S. Industrial Outlook", but I believe the publication has been re-named. I wouldn't rely too much on these anyway. In addition to checking the websites named above (which can be misleading for a number of reasons), I'd also read business publications, and check with any career guidance counselors your school might have.

That's brilliant.

Thanks guys you've really helped me.

That does make sense about not looking for what careers are in demand. Never thought Doh!

Thanks
Barry
