Help with Green Card Application

I married US citizen and we collected almost all the documents we need to apply, but there are certain things that I don't know what would be the best answer to give in order to fill out the papers. I entered US with J-1 visa and what it says on J-1 is student, exchange visitor. Is that what I should put for the question in which status you entered. Another thing is that my visa expired on May 1 2009, and am I consider out of status now? Somebody also wrote on one of the posts that it is good to disclose that you work although you are not allowed? Is that what everybody wrote? Do you think the best thing to do is to hire a lawyer? As far as I got informed they cannot speed the process in any way. I would really appreciate your responses. Thanks a lot!

Just put "J1 non-immigrant". Yes you are considered out of status. Did you already file for AOS? USCIS forgives out of status if you are married to a USC (that's what I heard :) )

Thanks swtblcn23. I didn't file anything yet. I want to send all the papers together and I heard that they are pretty strict, so I want to make sure I have all the data I need before I send the papers. Did you also file for Green card through marriage?

I'm not subject to 2 yr. Is the process now shorter than it was? It seems people get their GCs in 4 months.
