Help! Unemployment after extended LOA

My wife and I got our green cards last year and we were working in different states.

I took a LOA from my company earlier this year to take care of our new born baby in CA. After a few months, I found myself impossible to return to work at the end of my authorized LOA. And my company does not provide any extened LOA. So, I am jobless.

1. Do I eligible for unemployment benefits while I'm taking care of my baby at home?

2. If unemployment benefits require 'dilligent' job search, am I qualified if I can apply a few positions once a week? Or I can only be qualified once I can seriously dedicate my time to search jobs when my baby is a little old?

Thanks,

What was the circumstance in which you became jobless? As I mentioned in another thread in this forum, if you left your prev employer on your own choice, you wouldn't be considered unemployed.

Requirements for the recipients of UIs vary across states. You should contact your local agency to understand the requirements in your area.
My knowledge of possible requirements are limited, but for instance,
one may not only have to search jobs in the form of sending resumes and such, s/he may be also required to show up for interviews if called, and often also required to *take* a job that is offered.
Of course, the UI recipient is required to respond in a timely fashion all sorts of correspondences sent by the agency.

As far as you are eligible AND are able to meet the requirements, it's none of others' business how you spend the time left, caring for family members, or goofing off in front of TV. But caring for family cannot be used as a reason for not being able to meet the requirements.

Remember stay-at-home moms/dads, the sick, retirees, jobless students etc are considered as OLF (out of labor force) not unemployed in the US federal/also states' definition.

Since I could not return to work at the end of my approved LOA, I applied for an extension of LOA for a few months. My company concluded that I have already used maximum LOA allowed and could not authorize any further LOA. That's how I became jobless.

I could not find a similiar case as mine and wondering whether I can apply for unemployment according to regulations.

Thanks,
