Hi,

I came to Ohio in Nov 2008 in H4 and turned 20 on Jan 2009. My father with H1b is planning to apply for green card. I am currently a part time student. Please anyone suggest me what should I do, should I wait for the green card or apply for COS to F1.

Please help me!!!!

there are pro's and cons...

i am currently on my 6th year of H4 (sorry if i said on other posts taht i was on 7th.. i was confused)
my dad just applied for I-485 AOS past december. with that, we hope to get 1 year extensions until we get a notice that we have been approved or denied or watever.

I am a high school senior and being in H4 sux for going to college becuase we dont have a social security number. We cant apply for FAFSA. its hard to get scholarships and such. the only thing tahts making me not want to switch is that green card.

F1 has its advantages cuz you can work while you are in college. have a social security number (correct me if i'm wrong though). That alone will help you pay for college expenses.

It really sucks for me cuz i really want to work and help my parents pay for my college expenses....

hope this helps :D

On F1, you make only work in a very specific set of circumstances with approval. You may not just go out into the community and take any job.

Since you are not a citizen or permanet resident, there are very few opportuinities for scholarships and loans. You should look to attend a local community college to reduce your costs. If your father is working on H1B, he is considered a highly paid worker and should expect to pay most of the bills.

If there is a GC petition filed for you, you do not qualify for F1 status as you have demonstrated immigrant intent.
