Help needed regarding N400 process in Kansas do

Hi,
Please help me understand the following.
After I apply for N400, what is the sequence in which I should expect things to happen? I read about receipt date, NOA(have no idea what this is), check cashed date, FP date. Please let me know what are the sequence of these things.

Also I am planning to apply on a given monday and planning to travel out of the country the coming saturday, for example, apply on june 12th 2006 and travel on june 17th. Will this be a problem? Is it recommended to stay for a certain number of days before I travel?

Please help me understand.

also u can travel as long as it is a short term trip....
plz beaware that u r still a permanent resident and not a citizen...

make sure someone keeps an eye on ur mails...

How soon is it safe to leave the country for temporary purposes, after applying n400? Is it safe to leave after I receive the receipt notice ?
