Hi Gurus,

After getting the approval e-mail I have scheduled an appointment using Infopass and earliest appointment date I could get was in the 3rd week of December. I have following questions and would really appreciate if someone out there could help me out:

1. What's the recommended way of changing the last name of spouse from maiden name to married name? After doing some search in this forum, I found DelhiCP has mentioned that one should get the last name in passport changed in Indian Consulate first and take that ammended passport for the PP stamping and that way card would be ordered in the desired name. I wanted to make sure that's the best way. Has anyone out there experienced the same?

2. Has anyone used e-mail notification which USCIS sends after the case approval instead of actual notification for PP stamping?

Thanks,

Yes, it's better to change passport first and then GC. I would change SSN and drivers license between passport and GC changes - so that I can attach SSN and drivers license changes alongwith I-90.

Hi Pralay,

Thanks for your prompt response. I guess you mean to say change the last name on SSN card. Do you think I can change the last name on SSN without having I-551 stamped in the passport?

I guess you can change SSN and drivers license by showing your marriage certificate. Either way, changing name on SSN card or the name on drivers license should not take much time. Changing SSN name is not related to passport stamping - you can change name with or without that.

I never saw any posting with that info.

Looks like no-one ever tried that option.

Hi Usnycus,

I appreicate your response. Please let me know if you come across some thing like this.

Thanks.

It is not a big problem. You don't have to change your last name on your passport right now. Go ahead to process your green card applications with your new last name (married name) and other stuff like ssn card, medical, driver license, etc with your new last name (married name). Marriage certificate that should show new last name (married name) would be enough sufficient.

After you get your gc with your new last name (but your passport still shows ur old last name) and your ssn with your new last name, you can change your last name to married name on your passport at your embassy/consulate of your home country. That's what we did. There is no problem!

Only important thing is marriage certificate (should show old last name and new last name as married name). That's all you need to show for change of last name on any other documents such as 485, ssn, driver license, etc.
