When I-140 is denied - underlying I-485 is denied. When I-140 is referred to AAO , Your I-485 ( status is still - denied, until they reopen - if I-140 gets approved ). technically still 'Denied' status even though it is not showing on web site ( only letter from them shows). So it may be not possible to renew your EAD !!!
