Here is the deal:
  • Im 25 (born before 1984)
  • Living with my grandmother in the US
  • Born in Canada
  • Father spent up till his early 20's from birth in the US before moving to canada
  • I am a dual Citizen
  • But my parents never filled out a consular report of birth abroad
  • Trying to regain my citizenship
  • Cannot find my Dad (the US citizen) he has pretty much disowned all family and vanished but my gramma has basic info such as job history graduation papers birth reports/certificates
  • I have all my canadian papers

where do i start? what forms do i need? can this be done above the age of 18 and in absence of my US parent? this is insanely confusing and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the instructions on this page, assuming your mother is Canadian and your birth certificate shows your US citizen father you could qualify under 5.B. However, because you were born before 1986 the law at the time of your birth should apply. They provide a phone number you can call if you believe you are a US citizen and were born before 1986.

I've actually got the N-600 saved to my laptop, what gets me is the contact information for my dad, i cant fill that part of the form out because he has vanished, as well, the form talks about under the age of 18, does that not matter? Am i not reading it correct? Do i not need my fathers current contact information?

If you don't have it I guess you'll have to write unknown. Many people use this form for under 18, but it is a form to get proof of citizenship for foreign born individuals of any age who derived citizenship before they turned 18. In your case you might well have derived citizenship at birth through your father. Try to call that number in the N-600 instructions and if the first person doesn't give you good information try again. Of course it would help if your father would help you with providing documents to prove his presence in the US for more than 5 years, two of them after 14, or whatever the law requirements before 1986, but if you can't locate him, you can't locate him.

Hire a PI to track him down. There are many reputable companies which specialized in this type of work. I know of a woman whose father disappeared 25 years, but she was recently as in 3 weeks ago, got reunited with him after hiring a PI to track him. A happy reunion and everybody is happy, it is that important, spend the money dude...

Thanks for the clarification that the N-600 applies to people over the age of majority. I've done my research and by all the rules I am a US citizen at birth, so my only conundrum is finding out if having my fathers up to date contact info is required. I'll be calling that number tomorrow to get confirmation, and yeah I'll be calling a couple times cause I know how some people will just say whatever cause they don't really do their jobs. I want to be as sure as possible that i have everything before handing in that form.

That would be my first choice, if I had the money to spend. I gotta do this on my own I don't have a high bankroll backing me.
