hi,
My wife and I seperated about 2 years ago mutually. We haven't applied for divorce but are living sperately. We have no kids, I have been living in the US for about 7 years with a G.C. and want to apply for Citizenship. In the form under, Section 8 ("Information about Marital History") the questions on Spouse Citizenship say:
"
Is your spouse a U.S. citizen?
When did your spouse become a U.S. citizen?
Date your spouse became a U.S. citizen

If your spouse is not a U.S. citizen, give the following information
Spouse's USCIS ''A''- Number
Spouse's Immigration Status
"

I have no contacts with my wife anymore, so there is no way I can get the above information. What do I fill in for the above questions. Should I just list as unavailable/unknown?
and attach a letter stating the reasons of 'unknown'

please respond.
I am not in a position to hire a lawyer at this time.
thanks

Living seperately for 2 years without a legal seperation or divorce can be seen as pertaining to be immoral (as it principally defeats the purpose of marriage and you possibly not paying any kind of spousal support). Just my thoughts. I would suggest tracking her down and get a divorce.

You have 3 question and 2 more info regarding your wife.
You don't know the answer of any of the 5 above points?

just fyi, it is not illegal to stay seperated. It is illegal to marry someone without divorcing the first spouse.

And we both had GC's, so I dont know now if she applied for Citizenship in the last 2 years, or if she has not - so thats the reason I asked these questions.

tarla,
I am not questioning the legality. The issue is that of moral. In the checklist for eligibility there is a question - "I am of good moral character", will be judged by the officer, not you or me.
If you look at the forms, for people who are divorced, it asks for the divorce decree, and proof that you are paying spousal support/child support if its spelled so in the court order.
My question is, if there is a court order and you abide by its dictum, USCIS assumes you are of moral character (one aspect). Now, if you dont have a court order, but are seperated without a legal document, does that excuse this aspect ?

A quote from "A guide to Naturalisation" that you might find interesting:
If you have a dependent spouse or children who do not live with you, send:
q Any court or government order to provide financial support; AND
q Evidence of your financial support (including evidence that you have complied with any court or government order), such as:
• cancelled checks
• money order receipts
• a court or agency printout of child support payments
• evidence of wage garnishments
• a letter from the parent or guardian who cares for your children

Note the words "spouse who doesnt live with you". It didnt say if you were divorced or legally seperated.

Just tryign to help you here...

I recommend that you clean up the marriage/divorce mess before you get your self in the CIS hot water. Spend sometime and figure out how to file a divorce and then proceed with your immigration.
