I am planning to bring my parents ( 62-67 years) here for a short( 3- 5 months) visit.
I have seen many recomandations for short term medicall insurance but wondering
how was the responce when you actually have an occasion to use it.
Do we make payments upfront and then get reimbursed..
Any recomendations???
Do we buy it here or from India?

Thanks
B K.

Don't even think twice

Don't even think twice about getting insurance for your parents. My parents are of the same age and visit us almost every year. They never ever had to use it and I always use to wonder if it's worth the cost. Besides, my father was in a very good shape and used to walk like 4-5 miles every day. Last year though, 5 days before they were leaving he had a heart attack and had to undergo bypass surgery. The whole thing (surgery, hospital, medcines, CCU etc) costed over $100,000. The insurance has agreed to pay but haven't coughed out the money yet. He bought Insurance from India. I do not know the company name on top of my head.

This is serious stuff. Be careful about the insurance company you select. A friend of mine had a similar case and his father's bill ran over $300,000 and the insurance company has refused to pay a dime. Also, make sure you get adequate coverage. This guy had coverage for only $50,000.

Long story short, an insurance is exactly what it is - an insurance. Hope you'll never use it but be prepared.
