Has anyone revalidated their H1 visa at a consulate in India while AOS is pending

I am on H1 visa. My current H1 (approval) is valid till May 2003 but my visa expired in May 2002 and my AOS is still pending at VSC. I have to travel urgently (for an important occasion) to India within the next week. My question is how risky is it to go back to India at get H1 stamping again at a consulate when your AOS is pending. I applied for AP at VSC a month ago (9/26) and it is in its final stages (according to IIO but not yet clear when it will get approved). I have an EAD too but never used it.
Jaxen/Jim, your valuable advise is sought in this case.
