H4's ability to work

I have three questions regarding the H4 visa:

1. Can an H4 visa holder work somewhere as a volunteer?

2. If yes, can he/she receive compensation from the place of work in any form, even though he/she is not on the payroll?

3. If yes, what should be the mode of compensation - cash or check (with something like "Gift" written on it)

Please let me know asap if anyone has any information.

Thanks in advance.

If it is pure voluntary work, then the question of compensation does not arise at all. You may take a risk by accepting cash, however, you should be aware that it would be illegal to accept remuneration while being on H4,whatever the amount maybe. If USCIS finds out, most definitely you would be DEPORTED and may put the H1B holder at possible risk too.

Yes, you may volunteer for only some types of organizations whose fundamental existence is pure voluntary purpose - like Red Cross, etc.
Again, no compensation - absolutely.
