Hello Gurus,

Can someone give me some suggestions on how I can get past my current situation:

I am on a H1B and plan to marry a girl in India and get her here on H4 visa. But, I only plan to go through with a registered marriage without any ceremonies.

Now, the consulate office says , it needs proof of marriage invitation cards and atleast 30 photos. How do I get past these requirements?

Do I have to necessarily hold a ceremony just for the sake of the photos?

Please advice

take photos in the court house with witnesses etc. maybe do a newspaper announcement keepa a clip.

Ask the consulate. I did hear of someone neing rejected a H4 cause they decided to forgoe traditinal ceremony, but i guess the best bet is to ask the consulate, cause the civil marriage is legal in India.

heck! buy a couple of outfits and go to the temple and get the pictures taken.

Logically the absence of traditional ceremony should not be concluded as not married.

How do I ask the consulate? Can I write a mail to them? Or call them up and enquire? Any ideas?

Contacting consulate

Yeah, I have written a mail. I will update the forum if they get back...hopefully they will..

gc mania - i emailed them as well as ttsvisas(delhi) regarding this sometime back - tts replied " Please see the list (documents required) for H-4 and decide, in fact the visa officer needs to be convinced about the legitimacy of your marriage. "

So they neither said yes nor no !! confusing thing..

speaking of this i have a question - i plan to do both regd amd traditional marriage - now i will get the certificate from regd. mrg for one date ,but my invitation cards for my traditional mrg will have a different date listed on it - isn't that a discrepancy?

also guys, if anyone knows - how long does it take to get a marriage certificate? i heard you can either get married in court or arya samaj or any temple - all issue certificates and then we take it to the registrar of marriages to get the marriage certificate..for court mrg, we have to register a month in advance or something like that - is all this info right?

as for registering marriage, u can do it after the actual ceremony.
u need a certificate from the priest and the parents of the bride and gromm regarding marriage. and everyone needs to go to the office. Im my case my dad knew someone so we just got the certificate signed without actually having to go there. It was done the next day. But may take time unless u talk to someone in advance and have things ready.

Same response there...just got an attached document with Information same as on the website.

well how long does it take to attest one's name on the spouse's passport? thats another requirement of the embassy for the interview..is it as easy as walking into the passport office with mrg certificate and getting it done?

I dont think it is a requirement. It is not mentiaoned in any of the sites.

some consulates now require that the name of spouse be endorsed on passports. I am not familiar with the process of getting it, but it has been emntioned on the forums that it might take upto a week, but can be done faster on chai-pani knowing someone basis.

gc mania - its required by the delhi and mumbai embassy as far as i know - i heard it dosen't take too long if u catch an agent outside the passport office
