H4 to L1 question --- Please help!

Hi,

My wife changed her status from H4 to L1. Her change of status became effective from Aug 10, 2006. However, she will be working only from Oct 1, 2006.

What is her status between Aug 10 and Oct 1?

Also, can she apply for SSN with her H4 visa on the passport and the L1 approval papers?

How long does it take nowadays to get a SSN?
