H4 to H1 visa question

My wife has been in the US for the last 2 yrs and her H4 is expiring in march and is due for an extension. Now in the meantime, she has applied for a new H1 and is in process now. Now questions are
1) Should we apply for the H4 extension since we are not sure if the new H1 will be approved before the current H4 expires.
2) Incase we apply for the H4 extension to be on safe side, and also the H1 gets approved, what will be her status.

I think there is no need to apply for H4 Extension as her H-1 petition is still pending. If H1 gets approved her status will be change from H4 to H1 automatically. If it gets rejected then she can apply for H-4 extension
