H4 to H1 Need help transfer possible out of status

My wife is currently on H4 expiring on Sep 27th and she applied H1 waiting for approval. what will be her status from Sep 28th till October 1st? Do I need to apply for H4 extension? If I apply for her H4 extension, what will be her status after Oct. 1st?
