H4 to F1(travlelling on h4 while I-20 uder process)

My wife currently on H4 and she is planning to convert to F1or f2(student).I heard different stories like it takes any where from 3 to 4 months.any idea how many months it takes or taking

If my wife applies for f2 and leaves India for like 20 days, will there be any issues at the port of entry or in india with a H4 visa as her F2 uder process

please post any of your experience or you know stuff related like this

Traveling when a change of status petition is pending is considered abandoning that COS petition.
Also once F1 is approved, you might be asked to go to a US consulate to get a visa before you are allowed to start.
 
ur wife can change to F1 not F2 as f2 is the dependant of F1. if she leaves the country before she gets approved she will have abandoned her change of status application. If she is planning to visit India it will be better for her to apply there.

other facts.

She can start school before the COS gets approved, but can take up work ( assistantship etc) only after the approval.

But if she applies for F1 in India and gets it then she can start work as soon as she starts school, but will not be able to apply for F1 till about 30-60 days before her start date at school.

My advice, F1 appointments are not easy to get, so best is get an appointment and then plan the trip close to start date.

otherwise, apply for COS and abandon the plans to go to India. But remember the next time she travels she will have to get F1 stamped from India.
