H4-spouses name on my passport?

Do I need to get my spouse's name entered on my passport when I apply for my H4 visa?

There is some confusion on this. The FAQs on the US embassy (Delhi Consulate) website say that it is not mandatory, whereas some of the earlier posts on this forum suggest it is required.

Also, any clue of what the H4 visa processing time at the Delhi consulate is?

Delhi consulate respects people who want to keep their maiden name, mumbai consulate does not. Spell out why you are not changing surname in the covering letter if you are concerned.

You do not NEED to, but it is advisable to enter the spouse's name in your passport. For H4 visas, the consulate looks for evidence of marriage - the more evidence you provide, the better it is.

H4-new learning

thanks.

some more info i found out -

1. the US embassy - delhi consulate website says that it is NOT mandatory to enter spouse's name on your passport when applying for an H4.

2. to double check, i called the delhi consulate. the person on the phone confirmed that while it would be good if you could enter the name, it is NOT mandatory as long as you have other proof that you are married (registration cert, pics etc)

3. Here is the catch. to triple check (one can never be too safe about these things!!), met an embassy official (she is the supervisor of consular services). she said that it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY that the spouse's name be entered on the passport. when her attention was drawn to the FAQs on the website and the phone response, she brushed it aside saying, it is a mistake. just do what i am saying.

this is for info for all others in similar situation.

the procedure for entering spouses name in the passport is fairly simple -
- fill in an application form and submit it along with the fees, passport and marriage registration certificate at the passport office between 10 am and 2 pm

- they will return the passport with the spouses name endorsed on the same evening between 4 and 5.

i plan to get my spouses name entered in my passport. don't want that to be a reason for rejection.

hope this helps.

Wow. RPO doing stuff within a day!!! Great. It's ironic, that the PP office will just go by what you provide (I'm sure they would not verify stuff within half a day), but knowing the procedure the consulate will still accept that as opposed to the proof you will provide to the RPO (marriage cert.)
