H4 question

I am now holding H1 but my position will be cut off and my H1 will end on 05/12. My question is if I sent application to change from H1 to H4 now and if I find a new position before 05/12, can I call INS to cancel the H4 application? So that I can do H1 transfer.

The latest I-94 rules..

if you are not travelling out of the country..
and you set up an H4-H1 and an H1-H1 at about the same time...the last one to be approved will the the status that you will have.
I think you can always withdraw a petition..dont know how the INS acknowledges that.
However make sure that you have atleast 1 of the H1-H1 or H4-H1 applications pending before you get laid off...just to make sure that you have filed for extention or change of status at the right time.
