H4 processing in Mumbai Consulate

Hi,
I am currently on an H1B visa. My wife, who is currently in India, is planning to apply for an H4 visa through US consulate in Mumbai. I read on this forum that it is good to have the husbands name endorsed on the passport. And I also read that it's not required for the wife to get her name changed, just the endorsement in enough.

I would like to find out if somebody has gone to Mumbai for H4 recently and if so what exactly did they do. I wrote an email to the consulate but no replies. The visa-services web page does not ask for any endorsement or name change.

We enquired with the Indian Passport office and they said that endorsing my name in her passport will require her to get a new passport !!! This is completely new to me since all the accounts that i read so far on this forum said that endorsement does not require a new passport but can be done in the existing passport in a couple of days.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

pidit...which passport office

Hi pidit..
Did you inquire at Ahmedabad passport office. I also tried their and they told me the same. I heard Mumbai passport office allows endorsement of husband's name in wife's passport. But somehow ahmedabad office doesn't.

Can we get spouse name endorsed in any passport office. My fiances' passport was issued from Mumbai, we are getting married at Kerala. Can she get my name endorsed in her passport from cochin passport office? And how long it normally takes for this?

Thanks,

VJ
