H4 issue

I came to USA in june on H1-B, and have been on a project(as a consultant) since then. My wife attended for H4 visa in chennai consulate on 22nd Sept 2005. She was refused by giving 221(g) and asked for additional details like
1) Letter from client confirming my contract.
2) Some of my pictures at work
3) Pay clarification.
I genuinely provided all the documents, which my wife presented on 5th Oct 2005 at chennai consulate. On seeing the documents Consulate officer said, they would verify the document( given by my client) and call her back.

Its 3 months now, and did not hear anything from the Consulate. I have no idea how to proceed from here. Please advice me what can I do from here to make some progress.

What is the time frame in which I can expect a response from the consulate in such cases. Is there a way to find out the status? Can i mail to Chennai consulate and enquire about the status of the verification.
