H1B Visa Stamping in India

Hello everybody,

My I797 is valid until Sep 14, 2006, but I don't have a visa stamp. I am employed by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as a Project Staff (Scientist), and the international advisor here thinks it will not be a problem for me to get a visa stamp if I travel to India (Kolkata to be more precise). Could any of you please give any opinion as far as the amount of risk involved in doing so? Have any of you gotten visa stamp from Kolkata (or other centers in India in recent past)? Please note, I have not applied for my Green Card yet.

I will really appreciate your input on this as it is VERY important for me to decide my travel to India based upon that. Please post the response in this bulletin board.

You can safely travel to India and get your H-1B stamped there. From what I hear in these forums, Calcutta and Mumbai consulates are much easier to deal with than Chennai. Make sure you take your pay slips, W-2s and tax returns for all the years your were lawfully employed in the U.S. Check the Calcutta consulate website for other documents that you will need to take for H-1B stamping!
