H1B visa stamping in Canada vs. in India

Hello everybody,

My wife and I both are Ph.D.s from this country and now are H1 visa holders. Our H1 permit (I-797) expires in 2006 and we are thinking of travelling to India (Kolkata). Back in 2001 we went to India after getting H1 visa stamp from Toronto, Canada but forgot to get it revaildated from St. Louis within one year of its expiration! Now we have choices of either going to Canada again to get the visa stamp, or going to India and get it stamped there at the US consulate in Kolkata. Since (unlike in 2000) denial of US visa in Canada does not allow one to come back to US from Canada (with valid I-797 and the clause of staying < 30 days in Canada), we are looking for opinion from people who have recent experience (within last 1-2 years) of getting H1 visa stamped (for the 2nd time) in India.

This will greatly help us in planning our trip to India. We will greatly appreciate any opinion you may have on this

Warmest regards.

What did you do? I am also in similar situation. Either I have to go to KOLKOTA or Canada. Which one is better? Your input will be appreciated. Also I need a list of documents needed for stamping. Actually my F1 that is stamped on my passport has expired in 2002 Dec. I am in H1B now and never stamped. What is the chance of success of stamping? Pl. comment.
