H1B Visa Renewal/Revalidation in Montreal

I have an appointment next Thursday morning at 8:30am at the US Consulate in Montreal. I have a valid US H-1B visa that is expiring end of June 2004 and I just got an I-797 for approval of H-1B extension until November of 2005.

Quick questions. I filled out the DS-156 as I did the last time I got H-1B and I'm pretty sure I filled it out right, I have all the other paperwork, including letter from employer, pay stubs, I went to school here (so diploma), visa history, etc.

Given, this is hopefully a standard H-1B revalidation, what can I expect in Montreal in terms of processing? They're saying 3 days but is it really taking that long? My problem is that Monday is Memorial Day so they will be closed, which means if I don't get my passport back on Friday, I'm stick in Canada for the long weekend!

Any experience? Any hope I'll have it next day?

Pay attention

Don't do the mistake I did. Don't take my word. Read on various immigration forums, more and more people are getting stuck with FBI background check. Several Indians I know have been waiting for over a month now.

When you leave for montreal, prepare yourself for spending atleast 6 weeks. If you get back same day, good for you.

You should be aware that consulates in canada do tell you that it may take 60 days to get a stamp at the time when u take an appointment. So you should always prepare for that if u decide to go to canada. So getting stuck there is always a possiblity but its not that bad in canada as it is in India.

:(

You guys are scaring me. can you post your backgrounds if you were stuck there? I know there is always a chance but that's like when having any type of surgery, there is a chance of death.

Many employees at my company who have gone were delayed at the most 2-3 days but definitely not 60. I'm prepared for 2-3 days but if it was 60, I'd probably kill myself!!

From email exchanges with the Montreal Consulate and my appointment letter, they are saying it's 3 days and they never mentioned 60 days in any communication.

I've seen other posts where people got it the next day or even the same day recently? Where are those people?

Dont get scared i think u should be fine. I was only saying that when we actually book an appointment a javasript window opens describing all the information regarding their visa processing situaiton and there it is mentioned that it may take upto 60 days. But that is a special processing situation and it is most likely if there is a name hit for u and they have to get the clearance from D.C. In that case it may get delayed. Other than that there shoud be no problem.

Just exchanged more emails with the Montreal Consulate and they NOW say that it is entirely possible to get SAME DAY VISA ISSUANCE!! although they can't guarantee until the interview. This is still a huge improvement from them stating minimum of 3 days to possibly same day.

Even if I get it the next day, I'll be happy...very very happy! :p

yeah you're right...I never saw 60 days EVER...on Nvars.com, any forms or anything. Hopefully I'm excluded from that.

Same day would be heavenly...
