H1B Transfer

I am working with a company on my H1B visa valid till 2003. The company is doing bad now and I am afried that i may be laied off any time. So I am trying for a new job. If they lay me off from that day, how long I can use the same H1B visa to do a trasfer. Some says 10 days and other says 30 to 60 days. Which one is correct? Pl let me know.

Thanks for the info. How long is it ok to to stay with out a job to do a H1B transfer. Also in your case how long you waited to apply for the H1B transfer, after loosing the job in first company. Appreciate your hellp.

I have confirmed that officially within 10 days you should be able to fetch the new job. However if your previous company does not inform the INS to cancel your H1 visa then you do not need to worry. I personally stayed unknowingly for 3 months without job in 1998 after getting laid off. But make sure nobody informs INS specifically
