H1B Transfer - Not working after receipt of filing

I worked for Company A until October 2012 and then began the process of transferring my visa to Company B. Upon notice that the filing for the transfer had been received USCIS I resigned from Company A. I know that I was then legally able to start working for Company B, but my question is whether I have to? Or can I wait until the transfer is approved and then start working for Company B (but during that time in between I technically won't be working for either company).

You are not authorized to work for Company B, until you get the Work Authorization from Company B. If they denied your Work Authorization, You will be required to leave U.S.
