I am currently on H1b Visa and would like to apply for the green card. I am in the United States with my wife and daughter. Much information in "simplified" terms regarding the procedure would be appreciated. Is there a possibility that getting a green card is impossible for an H1b Visa holder?

Assuming your wife is not a US citizen or a green card holder, you will have get your employer to file for your green card if he wants to hire you as a permament employee. Start by carefully reviewing USCIS website: http://www.uscis.gov/greencard
