H1B to green card

I have worked as a teacher for my employer for 3 yrs and am currently on a 3 yr H1B visa. I wanted to know if I could apply for a green card on my own using my employer as my sponsor, would I need to do it through my employer or can I do it on my own. What is involved in the process, how much roughly does it cost and how long does the process normally take?

Your employer has to be willing to sponsor you for Green card. You need to talk to them. If they are not willing, look for another employer who will sponsor you for GC. Many times employer bear the cost, but many times the individual does too.. This process can take few years and can be costly specially using lawyers to file the paperwork. But, my best suggestion is to read up on employer based green card (www.uscis.gov) to see the details of the process.
