I'm currently doing my residency on H1B, I'll be done with my residency on June 2009, and my 6-year H1B is suppose to expire on August 2010. I heared that in order to be able to adjust my status from H1b to a green card I'll need to find an employer for whom I can work initially on the H1b for about a year then file for labor certification to adjust to a GC. is that the best route to go about this or there are other options? what if I decide to do a fellowship for an additional year which means by the end of my fellowship I'll have only a couple of months left on my H1b visa, would I still be able to do the GC thing afterwards?

yes.there are not many fellowships on H1, you may have more on J1. If you are with COB from india i would try to file my labor quickly so you have indefinit H1b renewal. you could also go to underserved areas and opt NIW.
