Hello,
I am canadian landed immigrant and am working in NY on H1B. I went to ottawa by road, using my car on august 13.
At the border post going to canada the official asked me if I had any guns, liquor or cigerates. I said no. Then he asked me how long its been i last visited canada. I told him about couple of months, after this he let me go.
I had an appointment at US embassy on 14. I was surprised to notice that visa officer was very polite. He asked me where I work. How long have I been employed there and what my job description was. Then he asked for the official letter from the company. I gave him the information and he told me to come back and pick up the visa at 3pm. I was surprised as I had heard that it takes about 3-4 weeks to get the visa as I am Pakistani citizen.
I was happy and was planning for the next few hours as I got the call from american embassy that they have wrongly informed me that I can pick up the visa at 3pm. Person asked me to come back.
I went back and I was given my passport back and visa officer told me that they would need to get the security clearance and it might take "a month" to get the approval. I asked him, if he could give me a specific date but he was not able to do that.
He gave me a fax number to contact. I did fax embassy after 2 weeks but didnt get any reply. Then I looked for the embassy telephone number on the web site and called them, person on the other line transfered me to visa official and she told me that they have not heard any thing. Finally I got the call on Sept 5 that they have received the approval and I can come in and get my visa stamped. I went back on Sept 8 and offical asked me if I wanted to get the visa and wait for 20 minutes or if I want to come back at 3pm to pick it up. I told him 3pm thing ...didnt work well for me b4 so go ahead and stamp it now. After stamping I drove back to NY on the same day.
On the border post, I asked the official that i need to register so he didnt ask me any questions other than what my name meant and sent me inside to get registered. Registration offical asked me how long have I been outside US and If I visited any other country. He didnt ask me to fill any paperwork.
This is just my experience and it might be different for you. Hopefully this helps.
