H1B layoff to Green Card Transfer?

I am on H1B visa in USA. I got married and filed for green card on family basis through my wife in Oct-2001. Till date I was on H1B visa. I got layoff. Is it possible I can transfer my visa on green card base and stay here legally? If yes then for which form or visa I should apply?

If your wife is a permanent resident, no since you cannot file an I-485 and therefore remain in status until your priority date is current and that will not be for about 5 years.

If your wife is a U.S. Citizen, yes since you can file an I-485 and thereby remain in a valid status while the AOS is pending.
