H1B extension - will you help me? Trying to do by myself

My immigration lawyer has helped me with my first H1B, change of employer and my greencard application. Because of the delay with BEC, my green card application hasn't been processed for 2 years.

My first 3-year H1B is expiring in June 2006 and because the GC is not pending yet, my laywer said I'd have to apply for H1B extension around Dec 2005. I've looked and read everywhere trying to find more info on extension but not much luck. He charges $1000 for filing the H1B extension and I will have to pay another $1000 after BEC approves my Labor certificate. I simply do not have that money right now.

Has anyone applied to the extension of H1B by him/herself? If so, how difficult was it? I've read somewhere that as long as they received my document before the expiration date, I will not be out of status. That means I have more time than before Dec 2005. Could someone share with me the sources where I can get a list of things I need to do for extension?

Any input/help is greatly appreciated.
