H1B Canadian visa holder with non-machine readable passport

I got a passport from a Canadian consulate some time ago. It was only a 1 year passport that goes to 5 years once validated. I had it validated while in Canada. They SHOULD have given me a machine readable passport instead. My question around this is as follows:

Do I really need a machine readable passport? I've been told different things by border agents. Canada is not part of the visa waiver program and from what I've read only Visa Waiver countries have this requirement. Can I keep my non-machine readable passport with no issue? I will be travelling this year not only to Canada, but also Germany and Sweden.

I'm going to Canada and could try to have the new Passport done escalated by showing that I'm only there temporarily. It will cost more, but I might be able to get it done quickly.

In the case where I do get a new passport, how do I get the stamps, etc, moved over to the new passport? What do I need to do this? Please let me know. Thanks.
