H1B approval, pay stubs and SSN

Can someone please help me ?

1. When your H1B is approved and you are already in US - how long can you wait before starting work? Say if the visa valid date is immediate then can you wait couple of weeks before starting work i.e. do you have to have pay stubs from your visa valid date?

2. When do you apply for SSN - when you receive visa approval or when you get the visa application reciept ?

Please help as soon as possible.

it depends on what visa you are prior new h1 is approved and whether you got your change of status is approved (if you get i94 attached to the new h1 approval notice). if you are already in h1 then you dont have to join immediately (but there are limit) but if you are in some other visa then you have to be on the company payroll from the date h1 is approved (along with i94)

2. When do you apply for SSN - when you receive visa approval or when you get the visa application reciept ?
only AFTER h1 approval
