H1B and marriage to American

I might be marrying my american girlfriend and I wondered with the current climate that I should push that along. I have heard that I get an interim visa that allows me to work anywhere (but I believe that takes 3 months to get to you)? Am I correct and then after 2 years you get the interview that will allow you to get your green card or not ? Does this sound right or am I missing something...
