H1B 6 Years -- how its counted?

How the 6 years H1B period is counted? Let me explain my situation. I have lived in this country working for company A,right from May 2000 to Oct 2002(Visa expired on Dec 2002). I was working in India for 2 years and came back to US through company B. Now the question is, 3 years visa I got this time, is the left over years or am I qualified to stay in this country for another 6 years since its a start over after staying out of this country for more than a year? Earliest reply is greatly appreciated.
