H1 visa extension beyond 3 years...gap what happens ??

One of my friend\'s H1 visa was expiring end of Nov 01. His papers were sent to the INS for extension a couple of days before expiry by the company though he submitted papers much earlier. He got H1 visa extension but the validity starts in Jan 2002. Is this normal ?

What happens to the period dec 01, was he out of status, any problems foreseen for GC ??

I am sure many of you have got your H1s extended here. Please clarify the above point...
 
Probably a mistake...

It is better to check it out. Ask your lawyer. It should have been from Nov \'01 to ???. My H1 expired in December, applied for extension in October but approved only in January. But the approval shows as December 01 to ....
 
Call INS and try to straighten it out.

The attorney or corporation needs to call and they will not want to do it since it takes forever to speak to an IIO.
